What Is the Electricity Consumption of an Iron?

Just like all heating and cooling appliances, electric irons have a thermostat. The electricity consumption of an Iron depends on whether the user sets the temperature himself or follows the temperature settings that the manufacturer provides.

 An electric iron (non-steam) was tested and found that the iron’s electrical heating element remained ‘on’ for approximately 30% of the time. The iron, rated at 1200W, consumes about 0.4 units of electricity per hour.

Power Consumed = Wattage Rating of Iron/1000 Appliance * 30%

= (1200/1000) * 1 * (30/100)

= 0.36 or about equal to 0.4 units

An average household uses an electric iron for approximately 10 hours per month. An average family will use four irons per month. 

There is no global energy efficiency rating for irons because of the limited use of electric Irons. These recommendations are therefore not based on energy efficiency but rather on utility, safety, and features.

The sole plate is heated by a resistive heating element called Nichrome. This is an alloy of 80% Nickle & 20% Chromium.

  3. Nonstick: Nonstick soleplates can be made by coating a metal with Teflon, Ceramic or another material like Aluminium. They are easy to maintain and evenly distribute heat. The only problem is that the coating can wear down over time. It glides well but scratches and cracks easily.

Before buying an electric Iron, it is important to understand its geometry of an iron. For gliding and covering all corners on a stitched fabric, precise geometry is essential. 

A pointed front with an oval back is the best. This shape is used by most manufacturers these days. However, if you do not see it on a manufacturer’s vehicle, avoid it.


For quick heating, a stainless steel plate with a lower thickness is preferable.


There are different electricity consumption of an Iron as per the types. The thermostats on electric irons allow them to control the temperature. The iron will turn off when the temperature reaches its destination. All Irons have this feature. 

Some Irons don’t have indicators that indicate if the iron has gone off. Avoid buying this iron. This indicator will tell you if your iron is on or off.

Some irons also have an LED display that shows the temperature constantly. You can also have different settings for different types of clothes. Some irons allow you to adjust the temperature to your preference.

A few Irons have a switch that turns off the iron automatically when it is not being used. Intelligent sensors detect if the iron is not in use for at least 10 minutes or if you leave it on its soleplate unattended for more than one minute. When it detects this, the iron will immediately turn off. This sensor acts as the ultimate safety device.

  1. Continuous fill: This allows you to refill your water tank without turning off the iron. You can choose the water tank size according to your needs.
  2. Steam pressed: This feature allows steam to penetrate fabric deep enough to quickly remove wrinkles. You can choose how much steam you want to inject from a range of 0-9. For linen and cotton cloth, steam ejection is performable. The mist will work for other types of clothes. The safety valve and water level indicator for steam and mist are part of the steam chamber. Ironing linen or cotton cloth will require more steam. The small or medium size iron is sufficient.
  3. Anti-scale: This feature prevents limescale from building up and prevents iron damage. You will need RO water to activate this feature.

Vertical ironing using steam bust

Ironing fabric hanging from a hook can be a chore. You might need to iron curtains or a fabric made of nylon, silk, or wool. 

You can iron vertically with steam busts using an Iron. The heat, water, and weight of the fabric all work together to remove wrinkles. For lightweight fabrics, vertical ironing won’t work well.

Travelling Iron

You can purchase a travel Iron if you wish to take an Electric Iron with you when you travel. These irons have low wattage and no steam jet or water spray functionality.
